Critical current density for layer-by-layer breakdown of a multiwall carbon nanotube

Electric-current-induced structural changes in a suspended multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were observed through situ transmission electron microscopy. The bias voltage and electric current measured simultaneously as the MWCNT was imaged. passage of excessive led to breakdown surface subsequent layer-by-layer removal broken outermost shell via sublimation atoms. accompanied by discrete decrease current. Under assumption that passes solely MWCNT, we found critical densities at which renewed occurred after limited remarkably narrow range (2.4 ± 0.2) × 109 A/cm2, irrespective diameter MWCNT. present results provide invaluable information about transport phenomena MWCNTs durability CNT nanocircuits.
